Where to eat around the world in Shrewsbury
House of the Rising Sun
With its stunning, industrial chic interior and touch of red velveteen luxe, the House of the Rising Sun has bags of atmosphere, paired with modern Australian cuisine and Pacific Rim flavours.
Chefs draw inspiration from their travels to offer plates of global street food and sharing dishes.
This is tapas-style dining, world-fusion style. Choose around three dishes each – from ‘Land’ ‘Earth’ or ‘Sea’ and share them together with friends and family.
Earth offerings come in the form of BBQ pulled jackfruit bao buns, or sweet potato and black bean empanadas. Sea plates include shrimp tacos and takoyaki – octopus dough balls with kewpie mayonnaise, nori & shaved bonito (a ray-finned fish!). The Land menu offers the likes of Peruvian BBQ pork belly and duck gyoza – as well as Indian, Cantonese, Japanese and Korean inspired dishes.
Desserts, as you might expect, are also drawn from the four corners of the globe, including the likes of: churros from Spain, Cheesecake 1000 ways and a pistachio and rose rice pudding with kiwi sorbet, among others.
Serving drinks, lunch, dinner, brunch with outdoor seating in summer and first class cocktails!

Umai
Sticking to the East of the globe, this little Japanese eatery on the corner of Golden Cross Passage offers spectacular sushi and sashimi, excellent tempura and gyoza.
All sushi is made fresh to order – watch the chefs in action on the way in! They have a real commitment to freshness, whether it comes in the form of Maki Rolls (six pieces per roll), including tempura salmon & avocado and soft shell spider crab, or flying fish roe Nigiri (two pieces), or hand-rolled Temaki – try the eel & cucumber Unagi!
Sashimi includes tuna, salmon, mackerel, Japanese yellow tail king fish, octopus, seabass and sweet shrimp.
Your heads will turn when you see one of Umai’s stunning party sushi platters go by – the Superior Combo is a thing to behold!
The bento boxes are super popular with students (available lunchtimes only), with broths, and fried tofu, sticky rice, salads and choice of curries, Teriyaki, Tempura, Tori Kara, Tonkatsu, Sashimi or Sushi.
For a more filling offering, try the rice bowl dishes (Donburi) and their famous reliable Kimchi Pork Bibimbap, served in a hot stone bowl, with kimchi and egg.
Wash it all down with Japanese Green Tea – the kids will love the Ramune (Japanese soda) in funky glass bottles with a glass ball in the top – or a choice of Asian beers, Japanese Sake or Plum Wine.
Bella Napoli
Restaurants come and go, but this one – offering family-friendly, authentic, Italian cuisine, has stood the test of time.
It’s a classic neighbourhood Italian, serving hearty, creamy risottos, Spaghetti, Penne, Lasagne, Tagliatelle, meat and fish dishes, as well as a good selection of oven-fired pizzas.
If you’re having a duvet day, Bella Napoli can be ordered via Deliveroo and there’s a newly refurbished exclusive first floor restaurant with seating for up to 50 guests – great for private parties and functions.
There is a special tapas menu too, perfect for sharing, with Parma hams, salami, Italian cheeses, olives and tomato pepper sauce – or a fish version, with smoked salmon, calamari, king prawns and grilled bread – and Gorgonzola.
Pop in for a full breakfast or a mid-morning coffee & cake, or enjoy a lunchtime special or evening meal. The lunch menus is served from 11.30am-5pm and typically offers a choice of four dishes (for example: spaghetti with tomato sauce and meatballs, Paella, Fegato Alla Veneziana (veal), or lunch tapas).
Desserts are predictably delicious: Panna Cotta Fruitti di Bosco, Crème Brulee, Tiramisu, lemon cheese cake, Nutella crepes and a selection of ice creams.
The Curry House
A traditional curry house in the heart of Shrewsbury, The Curry House has been serving Shrewsbury for over 50 years.
Opened July 1970 on Mardol, it offers fine dining, Indian style in a sophisticated setting.
Chefs take a trip back to their roots in the Indian Subcontinent, to re-familiarise themselves with newly found spices, dishes and re-connect with old ones. They use organically-farmed British produce, locally sourced.
There’s a choice of Exclusive Appetisers and Mains, including things you might not find elsewhere. Appetisers include ‘Scallops Side By Side’ – a trio of king scallops (each with a different flavour!) served on a bed of spicy spinach and cashew nut bajee and ‘The Streets of Mumbai’ – an Aloo Tikka Potato cake on a bed of cucumber and sweet pea relish.
Mains are beautifully presented – featuring sea bass, duck and monkfish. Why not push the boat right out and order the Chef’s Thali, a true reflection of Gujarati heritage and a whole meal served on a single palate.
Shrewsbury Market Hall
Our exciting and inspirational Market Hall has foods of the world under one roof.
Go watch dumplings made fresh to order at Moli’s Tea House or stop in at Barkworth’s St Pierre Seafood Bar, selling oysters and crab sandwiches. Pick up a pork steamed bun or fresh fish cakes from top chef Adrian Badland at The Lunch Box. If you’re in a hurry Tom’s Table will make you salads and fresh sandwiches to go. Tom also offers cocktails and real ale during the Market Hall’s famous late night openings.
Head over to the little Thai jewel that is House of Yum or pick up Indian Street Food from Mrs Dal Kaur.
Watch out for the Market Late Nights, when lots of the cool cafes, street food venues, bars and retail stalls stay open until 10pm. There are occasional super cool pop-ups too, including American menus from the Black Box Spice company.
